Welcome to the Arkansas Highways Task Force of WikiProject U.S. Roads!
Scope and goals
All state-maintained highways in Arkansas, including all Interstate Highways, U.S. Highways, and Arkansas state-numbered highways, and any other road-related transportation articles of note. The goal is to organize, standardize, and expand the articles on highways in Arkansas to be a broad, comprehensive, and recognized resource.
Recognized content

Resources
- ARDOT
- The Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department Database can be used for all route lengths. In Arkansas, there are almost no concurrencies, the more major route takes priority and the mileage is NOT included again for the smaller route, even if it is a signed concurrency. Traffic data also included
- County maps includes 1936 maps
- Route and Section maps (by county) includes some mileages
- Historical state maps
- State library map archives
- Institutional roads
- National Highway System listings
- All-time list (including detailed history on the talk page)
- /State line crossings
- Media related to United States/Arkansas at Wikimedia Commons
- Arkansas Democrat-Gazette (libraries, before 1923 on Newspapers.com, Publishers Extra not required) - archives seem to be hosted by Newsbank but no public library bought it
Structure and standards
Articles should follow AA:MURA.
Naming convention
Articles should be titled "Arkansas Highway X" per AA:NC.
Shields
The various shield graphics are located in Category:Arkansas State Highway shields on Commons. {{jct}} can create the various links to highway articles with the appropriate shield graphics for use in the infobox or junction lists.
Lead
- One route segment
Highway X (AR X, Ark. X, Hwy. X, and [Road name]) is a/n (north–south / east–west) state highway in ([County, Arkansas] if only one county, otherwise use NW, N, NE, E, SE, S, SW, W, or central Arkansas, or use MSA if entirely contained within). The route of 0.01 miles (0.016 km) runs from [Hwy. Y] in [town] (north / east) (add if route crosses a major route or major river: across [Hwy. Q] / [River]) to [Hwy. Z] in [town]. (Ref)
- Two or more route segments
Highway X (AR X, Ark. X, Hwy. X, and [Road name]) is a/n designation for (two, three, four, etc.) (north–south / east–west) state highways in ([County, Arkansas] if only one county, otherwise use NW, N, NE, E, SE, S, SW, W, or central Arkansas, or use MSA if entirely contained within). One route of 0.01 miles (0.016 km) runs from [Hwy. Y] in [town] (north / east) (add if route crosses a major route or major river: across [Highway Q] / [River]) to [Hwy. Z] in [town]. (Ref) A second route of 0.01 miles (0.016 km) begins at [Hwy. A] in [town] and runs (north / east) to [Hwy. B] in [town]. (Ref) A third route of 0.01 miles (0.016 km) begins at [Hwy. A] in [town] and runs (north / east) to [Hwy. B] in [town]. (Ref)
- Short connector routes
Highway X (AR X, Ark. X, Hwy. X, and [Road name]) is a/n (north–south / east–west) state highway in ([County, Arkansas] if only one county, otherwise use NW, N, NE, E, SE, S, SW, W, or central Arkansas, or use MSA if entirely contained within). The route of 0.01 miles (0.016 km) serves as a connector from [Hwy. Y] in [town], running (north / east) to [Hwy. Z] in [town]. (Ref)
- Spur routes
Highway X Spur (AR XS, Ark. XS, Hwy. XS, and [Road name]) is a/n (north–south / east–west) state highway spur route in [town]. The route of 0.01 miles (0.016 km) runs from [Hwy. Y] (north / east) to [Hwy. Z].
Mileages
For GIS data and the route log database, be careful at concurrencies. AHTD only counts a segment once even if more than one route follows the road. The traffic book gives precedence to the highest-class highway with the lowest number (I-30 → I-40 → US 49 → US 271 → Highway 1 → Highway 549). You will have to add in the corresponding segments to get the complete length. It is this total that is the route length. Note: most Arkansas highway articles are not currently utilizing this rule, please feel free to change it if you see it
Infobox
Use the below example formats for displaying termini in the infobox. Change these to suit the situation as needed. Use "in" for junctions in city limits and just say "near" for a junction nearby a town. "Near" should be near enough that a layperson would think the junction could possibly in town if they did not see city limit signs.
- Termini at highways in town/city limits
- I-40 in Little Rock
- Termini at highways in unincorporated areas
- AR 74
- Termini at highways in unincorporated places or CDP
- AR 24 at Romance
- Termini at state lines, continuing as numbered highway
- SH-3 at the Oklahoma state line
- Termini at state lines, continuing as county road
- Oklahoma state line
- Termini at county lines
- Benton–Washington county line
- Termini at unnumbered (town/city/county) roads in city limits
- Davis Street in Pine Bluff
- Termini at campsite, state park, WMA, recreational area, or other park
- Devil's Den State Park
- Termini at numbered county roads
- CR 4762 at Canehill
- Termini at unnumbered county roads
- End state maintenance at Davis Road
- Termini at parks or other recreation areas
- Lost Bridge Park
- Termini at highways, concurrent with another highway
- I-40 / US 65 / US 67 / US 167 in North Little Rock
In article prose
Arkansas is currently trying to transition to "Highway XX" as the only name used in prose. Non breaking spaces are encouraged. Example:
AR 24 Highway 24 has a short concurrency with AR 41 Highway 41 in Horatio, but continues east alone.
History
Arkansas State Highway Commission Minute Orders dating to 1953 are available from AHTD for use in historic research.
Statewide maps from 1924-present, and county maps from various years are available here.
Categories
Articles should be placed in the following categories as appropriate:
- Category:State highways in Arkansas for most highways
- Category:Interstate Highways in Arkansas for highways that are also part of the Interstate Highway System in the state
- Category:U.S. Highways in Arkansas for highways that are also part of the U.S. Highway System in the state
- Category:Arkansas by county for each county the highway runs in
Templates
Infobox
Use {{infobox road}} or {{infobox road junction}} as needed for articles. The state parameters should contain the state's postal abbreviation. The type codes are the same as for the junction template below.
Junction template
Use {{jct}} to create the entries in a junction list section for the article, or the junction list in the infobox. To use, insert {{jct|state=AR|type|number}} into the article. If two to four highways are needed, use {{jct|state=AR|type|first number|type|second number}}. Types can be I for Interstates, US for US Routes or AR for state routes. Further instructions can be found on the documentation page.
