Hello and welcome to the front page of the New York State Routes task force of the AARoads Wiki! If you would like to help, feel free to jump in and start editing articles on New York state routes and related highways. Guidelines and resources to help you add content to articles are available at Standards and Resources, respectively.
Scope
This task force maintains articles regarding New York state routes and related highways in New York. These include:
- Interstate Highways
- U.S. Highways
- New York state touring (signed) routes
- New York state reference (unsigned 900-series) routes except bridges, as detailed below
- Generally, reference routes will not have articles unless the route is a parkway (such as the Taconic State Parkway).
- Toll roads
- Freeways, parkways, expressways, and similar controlled access or semi-controlled access roadways, regardless of whether it carries a numbered route
- Historic auto trails
- Former alignments of numbered routes except city streets, as detailed below
- Any notable roadway of regional significance which does not fall under the purview of w:WP:USST.
- County routes
Goals and purpose
To organize, standardize, and expand the articles on New York state routes and related highways in New York.
Guidelines and structure
If abbreviations for numbered routes ("NY X" for "New York State Route X", "I-X" for "Interstate X", and so forth) are used in the prose of an article, they must be introduced properly. This is done by using the full name of the route when it is first mentioned and placing the abbreviation in parentheses immediately following the full name. From that point onward, the abbreviation should be used instead of the full name. It is only necessary to do this once per route type (state route, Interstate Highway, etc.) per article. For examples of this in practice, see any of the task force's Featured Articles.
County routes shall be tagged with |state=NY|type=CR
for task force article list purposes. If a state route designation redirects to a county route article, then that article shall be dual tagged as |state1=NY
and |state2=NY-CRTF
. Generally, individual county routes will not have an article unless:
- The county route article covers a former New York state touring route.
- Example: County Route 18 (Otsego County, New York) covers New York State Route 413, which comprised part of modern CR 18.
- The county route has a substantial history, typically but not necessarily relating to a former New York state touring route, that cannot be adequately covered elsewhere.
- Example: County Route 106 (Rockland County, New York) was once part of New York State Route 210; however, merging to NY 210 would result in a substantial loss of article content and merging to the Rockland County Route RCS list would make its section disproportionately large.
County routes that do not meet either of these criteria should be folded into an RCS-style list or redirected to an appropriate location. County routes that are former alignments of New York state touring routes typically do not warrant a standalone article and should be merged to either the touring route in question or an RCS-style list.
The task force has developed standards for all lists and articles within the scope of this task force, aimed to maintain a consistent format for all lists and articles relating to roads in the state of New York.
