Welcome to the Ontario Roads WikiProject, a group of editors devoted to improving the coverage of the Ontario highway network and facets of Ontario's highway heritage. Please consider joining us in our attempt to craft the greatest Ontario historical highway resource on the internet.
Scope
This project covers any and all roads (past and present) within the province of Ontario that are not city streets. This includes:
Freeways, expressways, parkways
Provincial highways; primary, secondary, and tertiary
Former provincial highways
Numbered county roads (except in Windsor, Hamilton and Ottawa)
Historic routes with a significant story to warrant a separate article from their modern counterpart (i.e. The Middle Road)
Before you get too excited however, there are guidelines. Most likely, the street you live on is not notable enough to warrant an article. Only certain roads will meet Wikipedia's notability requirements. All highways and all numbered roads are eligible, as are prominent named streets, such as Cootes Drive in Hamilton, Yonge Street and De Grassi Street in Toronto, etc. Arterial roads come down to a case by case basis.
The general basis is whether or not you can provide several independent reliable sources for an article. Do not create an article without sourcing what you write (note that a map or an atlas is a reliable source for distances, locations, and termini/junctions, but does not constitute a valid source for the notability of a road.) Avoid, whenever possible, speculation; that is to say, do not deduce what the construction you passed on the highway was for. Search the MTO website for a contract in that area, and source it!
If you can create an article on a road using reliable sources, with a History and a Route description section, then your article will generally pass.
