- Aug. 1, 1949 – A bypass of Secaucus, New Jersey is opened as part of Route 3
- Aug. 1, 1956 – Two sections of New York's Southern Tier Expressway ending at Horseheads and Elmira are connected
- Aug. 1, 2007 – The I-35W Mississippi River bridge carrying Interstate 35W across the Mississippi River in Minneapolis, Minnesota collapses, killing 13 people

- Aug. 6, 1976 – A helicopter crashes on Interstate 84 near Patterson, New York, causing power outages and closing the highway for several hours
- Aug. 7, 1951 – The Pennsylvania Turnpike is extended west from Irwin to the Pittsburgh interchange at Monroeville

- Aug. 10, 1990 The final section of coast-to-coast I-10 is dedicated, the Papago Freeway Tunnel under downtown Phoenix, Arizona.
- Aug. 11, 1954 – A large section of the Garden State Parkway is opened from Tilton Road in Egg Harbor Township to US 9 at the south bank of the Mullica River; north of the White Horse Pike, the road initially operated as a temporary super two on the southbound lanes

- Aug. 13, 1958 – A bypass of Penn Yan, New York's Main Street is opened along Liberty Street as part of NY 14A

- Aug. 16, 2005 – The portion of New York's I-490 from exit 9 (I-390 and NY 390) in Gates to exit 27 (NY 96) in Perinton is ceremoniously designated as the "Erie Canal Expressway" by the New York State Legislature
- Aug. 17, 1961 – A 40-mile section of Interstate 81 from NY 17 at Five-Mile Point, New York to PA 107 opens
- Aug. 17, 1966 – New York State opens a $17-million section of the Adirondack Northway between Warrensburg and exit 26 at Pottersville.
- Aug. 17, 1971 – The roadways of the southbound Garden State Parkway and US 9 in Woodbridge Township, New Jersey are flipped as part of an upgrading of the interchange between the highways
- Aug. 19, 1955 – A section of the Quickway from NY 208 to Chester opens, connecting two extant sections
- Aug. 19, 1964 – The first northerly extension of New Jersey's Middlesex Freeway is opened from US 22 in Bridgewater to US 206 in Bedminster
- Aug. 20, 1969 – The first section of New York's Aurora Expressway is opened, extending exit 54 of the New York State Thruway to Jamison Street in Elma
- Aug. 20, 2007 – A $60-million project to elevate the Southern Tier Expressway and remove at-grade intersections in Horseheads, New York between NY 14 and NY 13 is completed

- Aug. 22, 1980 – Eastern Boulevard south of Canandaigua, New York is extended as Western Boulevard to West Avenue, bypassing the city to the south
- Aug. 22, 1986 The final section of the coast-to-coast I-80 is dedicated on the western edge of Salt Lake City, Utah, making I-80 the world's first contiguous freeway to span from the Atlantic to Pacific Ocean and, at the time, the longest contiguous freeway in the world.

- Aug. 23, 1954 – The Delaware River Extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike opened between King of Prussia and US 611 in Willow Grove

- Aug. 24, 1971 – The westbound portion of the Bergen-Passaic Expressway between New Jersey Route 23 and Squirrelwood Road in West Paterson is opened
- Aug. 25, 1954 – The sections of the New York State Thruway terminating at US 15 in West Henrietta and the NY 5 interchange at Amherst are connected by the opening of a 63 mile section between the two
- Aug. 25, 1976 – The Southern Tier Expressway is extended westward from Jamestown to Bemus Point
- Aug. 25, 2017 – The northbound/westbound span of the new Tappan Zee Bridge is opened for traffic along the New York State Thruway
- Aug. 26, 1950 – A new bridge across the Chemung River to Corning, New York's east opens, soon to be linked to the Denison Parkway
- Aug. 27, 1954 – The Atlantic County section of the Garden State Parkway is extended from Tilton Road in Egg Harbor Township to US 9 at Somers Point, temporarily as a super-two on what would become the southbound lanes
- Aug. 27, 1970 – The Irondequoit–Wayne County Expressway, a realignment of US 104, opens between the Sea Breeze Expressway and Five Mile Line Road
- Aug. 27, 1970 – The Interstate 84 bridge over the Delaware River links the existing section in New York at Port Jervis to US 6/209 in Matamoras
- Aug. 27, 1980 – A disconnected section of New York's Interstate 88 is opened from Richmondville to Cobleskill
- Aug. 27, 2023 – The final sections of the old I-74 Bridge which carried Interstate 74 between Iowa and Illinois are demolished by explosives.
- Aug. 28, 1954 – A gap in the Garden State Parkway between US 9 at Chestnut Neck and East Greenbush Road at New Gretna is bridged by a new bridge over the Mullica River, opened as a super-two before the other lanes are opened a few weeks thereafter; the Cape May County section was also extended from exit 12 north to Route 50 in Seaville
- Aug. 28, 1958 – The southeasterly section of Rochester's Inner Loop from South Street to George Street (now roughly Adventure Place) opens.
- Aug. 28, 1969 – Rochester, New York's Eastern Expressway is completed with the opening of the section from the New York State Thruway to NY 96 at Bushnell's Basin
- Aug. 29, 1957 – The final section of the Garden State Parkway is opened from Grand Avenue in Montvale, New Jersey to the New York State Thruway at Chestnut Ridge, New York
- Aug. 29, 1969 – The section of New York's Southern Tier Expressway from Apalachin to Westover opens
- Aug. 29, 1977 – A bypass of Camillus, New York, including NY 695, is opened as NY 5 is rerouted onto the new highway
- Aug. 29, 1980 – The section of the Genesee Expressway from Dansville to NY 36 in Groveland opens
- Aug. 30, 1973 – A gap in New York's Southern Tier Expressway between Waverly and Nichols is closed
