- Aug. 20, 1969 – The first section of New York's Aurora Expressway is opened, extending exit 54 of the New York State Thruway to Jamison Street in Elma
- Aug. 20, 2007 – A $60-million project to elevate the Southern Tier Expressway and remove at-grade intersections in Horseheads, New York between NY 14 and NY 13 is completed
- Aug. 21, 1954 – The northbound lanes of the Garden State Parkway are opened from US 30 in Galloway Township to the foot of the Mullica River at US 9

- Aug. 22, 1986 The final section of the coast-to-coast I-80 is dedicated on the western edge of Salt Lake City, Utah, making I-80 the world's first contiguous freeway to span from the Atlantic to Pacific Ocean and, at the time, the longest contiguous freeway in the world.
