U.S. Highway 70 (US 70) runs east–west through across the heart of Arkansas for 286.9 miles (461.7 km). US 70 enters the state from Oklahoma west of De Queen, and exits to Tennessee at Memphis, running concurrently with Interstate 55 (I-55), US 61, US 64, and US 79. The highway passes through the major cities of Hot Springs, Little Rock, North Little Rock, and West Memphis.

Between Oklahoma and Hot Springs National Park, US 70 is largely rural and two-lane. The route bypasses much of the city to the south and then serves as the arterial road between Hot Springs National Park and Little Rock. The highway runs concurrently with I-30 between a place north of Haskell to southwestern Little Rock, where it splits to traverse through downtown Little Rock and North Little Rock. Between North Little Rock and its merge into I-55 at West Memphis, the route is principally two-lane and has been supplanted by I-40, which always runs within a few miles of the highway.

Route description

US 70 enters the state east of Broken Bow, Oklahoma. The highway runs east as a two-lane state highway through a rural part of Southwest Arkansas before crossing Rolling Fork and passing the Sevier County Airport. After the airport, US 70 turns to run north around the central business district of De Queen, the county seat of Sevier County. Within De Queen, US 70 is named Collin Raye Drive in honor of the hometown country music singer.[6] The route junctions with US Highway 70 Business (US 70B), a former US 70 alignment, which serves downtown De Queen. US 70 continues east through the De Queen, serving as the northern terminus of AR 399 (College Drive) near the Cossatot Community College campus before crossing over Little Bear Creek and the Kansas City Southern Railway tracks. US 70 meets US 59/US 71/US 371, as well as US 70B at the following signal. An overlap forms eastbound with US 59/US 71; US 371 and US 70B (Lakeside Drive) terminate at this junction. Together, the routes run east out of De Queen and through the unincorporated community of Red Wing and over the Cossatot River before splitting at a junction in eastern Sevier County.[7] Continuing east, US 70 serves as the northern boundary of the Provo Wildlife Management Area (WMA) before crossing the Saline River and enters Howard County.[8]

Upon entering Howard County, US 70 passes through the unincorporated community of Atwood before entering Dierks, a small sawmill town. The route winds toward downtown Dierks, first paralleling the De Queen and Eastern Railroad as Front Street before curving north and becoming Main Avenue.[9] At Fourth Street, US 70 intersects US 278, and a wrong way concurrency forms northbound for 3.3 miles (5.3 km). After US 278 turns from the route, US 70 continues northeasterly into Pike County.[10]

In Pike County, US 70 pases through Grandfield before meeting AR 369 at Newhope. The two routes overlap eastbound, crossing the Little Missouri River and passing along the northern edge of Lake Greeson. After AR 369 turns north, US 70 crosses the lake on the historic Self Creek Bridge and passes Daisy State Park before turning left at a junction with AR 27 and AR 84 at Kirby. US 70/AR 84 continue together as a wrong-way concurrency north to Salem, where AR 84 turns west. The route curves east to the small town of Glenwood, where it briefly overlaps with AR 8 (and unsigned AR 27) along a bridge over the Caddo River. On the east side of the bridge, AR 8/AR 27 turn north with US 70B (Elm Street) to serve downtown Glenwood. US 70 continues east through Glenwood, passing the Iron Mountain Railroad Depot, serving as the eastern terminus of US 70B (Broadway), and passing a former alignment before crossing into Montgomery County.[11][12]

US 70 passes through Welsh and serves as the eastern terminus of AR 182 before entering Hot Spring County,[13] where it passes through Cross Roads, Bonnerdale, and the Ouachita National Forest before entering Garland County.[14]
