Highway 41 (AR 41) is a designation for two state highways in Arkansas. One route of 18.02 miles (29.00 km) runs from the entrance to Citadel Bluff Park south to AR 23 near Chismville.[a 1] A second routing begins at US Route 70B (US 70B) in De Queen and runs south[a 2] to Texas State Highway 8 (SH 8) at the Texas state line.[6][7]
The southern route was created during the 1926 Arkansas state highway numbering, with the second created in 1953 and extended twice in the 1960s. A former alignment of Highway 41 existed as Highway 41 Business (AR 41B), a business route in De Queen for twelve years, until it was transferred to city maintenance in 1992.
Both segments of AR 41 are currently maintained by the Arkansas Department of Transportation (ArDOT).
Route description
The ArDOT maintains AR 41 like all other parts of the state highway system. As a part of these responsibilities, the department tracks the volume of traffic using its roads in surveys using a metric called average annual daily traffic (AADT).
ArDOT estimates the traffic level for a segment of roadway for any average day of the year in these surveys. As of 2023, traffic ranged from 150 vehicles per day near Citadel Bluff Park to 800 VPD north of Branch.[8] For reference, the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), classifies roads with fewer than 400 vehicles per day as a very low volume local road.[9]
No segment of AR 41 is part of the National Highway System (NHS),[10] a network of roads important to the nation's economy, defense, and mobility.[11]
Citadel Bluff Park to Chismville
The route begins near the Arkansas River at a United States Army Corps of Engineers park called Citadel Bluff. AR 41 runs south to a junction with AR 96 in Cecil and continues to wind further south to Peter Pender, where the route has junctions with AR 288 and AR 60.[12] South of these junctions AR 41 serves as the western terminus for AR 398 north of Branch. Upon entering Branch, AR 41 forms an officially designated exception in which it shares the same strip of pavement with AR 22 for 0.60 miles (0.97 km) westbound. The route turns left and runs south into Logan County, where the route terminates at Highway 23 near Chismville.[13] Traffic counts from the Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department (AHTD) reveal that no more than 800 vehicles per day (VPD) used Highway 41 along its routing from Citadel Bluff to Highway 23.[10]
De Queen to Texas
AR 41 begins at US 70 Business and Highway 329 in De Queen and runs south to a junction with Highway 24 near Horatio. These two routes form a concurrency through Horatio which ends when Highway 24 at Williams Street with Highway 41 continuing southwest past the Pond Creek National Wildlife Refuge into Little River County.[6] Upon crossing the Little River the highway has a junction with Highway 380 at Billingsly's Corner before winding south to cross Highway 234 at Cross Roads.[7] The route becomes a section line road and continues along this line into Foreman where the route becomes Madden Street. Highway 41 intersects Highway 32 and Highway 108, and continues south in a brief overlap with Highway 32. This overlap concludes shortly south of town and Highway 41 continues along the section line due south to meet the Red River at the Texas state line, where it becomes State Highway 8.
History
AR 41 was created during the 1926 Arkansas state highway numbering.[1] The original route was established between De Queen and Texas and has remained largely unchanged. A second segment was created between AR 96 in Cecil to and AR 22 in Branch in 1953.[a 3] The Arkansas State Highway Commission extended the route to Chismville on June 23, 1965.[16] The AR 41 designation was extended to the current northern terminus at Citadel Bluff Park on September 25, 1968.[17] Road construction in Foreman led to a minor alignment change in 1970, with the AR 41 designation moving from 10th Avenue, Schuman Street, and Bell Street to the newly constructed Madden Street.[18] A similar realignment took place in De Queen in 1980; with Highway 41 being rerouted away from the historic city center to a newly constructed roadway.[19]

Highway 41 Business (AR 41B) was a business route of 0.9 miles (1.4 km) in De Queen.[10] The highway ran from Highway 41 south of De Queen to US 70 Business.[22]
The highway was a former alignment of Highway 41, retained in the state highway system following a rerouting of the parent route.[19] It was deleted on February 19, 1992 by the Arkansas State Highway Commission at the request of the Mayor of De Queen, with the city accepting maintenance responsibilities.[21]

Notes
- ^ Although Arkansas highways normally run from south to north and from west to east, the Franklin County Route and Sections Map[2] indicates that AR 41 begins at Citadel Bluff Park and ends at AR 23 in Logan County.
- ^ Although Arkansas highways normally run from south to north and from west to east, the Little River County Route and Sections Map[5] indicates that AR 41 begins at US 70B in De Queen and runs south to the Texas state line.
- ^ Highway 41 appears on the Official 1953 map,[14] but not on the Supplemental Printing of the Official 1952 map, which was issued in March 1953.[15]
