Highway 398 (AR 398) is a designation for two state highways in Arkansas. Both segments are short rural highways in the Arkansas River Valley designated in the 1970s. The highways are both maintained by the Arkansas Department of Transportation (ArDOT).

Route description

The ArDOT maintains AR 398 like all other parts of the state highway system. As a part of these responsibilities, the department tracks the volume of traffic using its roads in surveys using a metric called average annual daily traffic (AADT). ArDOT estimates the traffic level for a segment of roadway for any average day of the year in these surveys. As of 2022, traffic was estimated at 190 vehicles per day (VPD) in Franklin County and 210 VPD in Logan County.[4] For reference, the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), classifies roads with fewer than 400 vehicles per day as a very low volume local road.[5]

No segment of AR 398 is part of the National Highway System (NHS),[6] a network of roads important to the nation's economy, defense, and mobility.[7]

Franklin County

The route starts at a junction with AR 41 south of Peter Pender in the Arkansas River Valley. The highway runs due east to terminate at Franklin County Route 62 (CR 62, Kersey Road); it does not junction any other state highways.[8]

Logan County

The second segment of AR 398 begins at a junction with AR 23 in the small town of Caulksville. AR 398 runs due north a section line road; entering Ratcliff where it is named Wilson Avenue.[9] The road crosses Little Creek before a junction with AR 22, where it terminates.[10]

History

The Arkansas State Highway Commission created the first segment of AR 398 along a county road in Franklin County on May 23, 1973.[1] A second segment was created on February 27, 1974.[11]
