Route description
US 65 enters the state from Missouri at Lineville. The highway follows a single track of railroad for a short while before turning due north. It meets Iowa 2 at a rural intersection between Leon and Corydon. It continues to the north and passes through Humeston and near Derby before reaching Lucas. There, the highway briefly overlaps US 34, which joins from the east and exits to the west. North of US 34, the road continues to the north and west; it passes to the west of Liberty Center. West an intersection with County Road G58 (CR G58), which heads east into Milo, US 65 turns to the west. Near Lake Ahquabi State Park, it meets US 69, which joins from Osceola to the south; CR G58 heads into the park. Once again heading north, the two U.S. Highways travel into Indianola, where they meet Iowa 92.
North of Indianola, the roadway becomes a four-lane expressway. As they approach Des Moines, the two roads meet Iowa 5, which is situated on a bypass of the Des Moines metro area. US 65 exits onto the bypass and US 69 continues north into the capital city. US 65 and Iowa 5 only overlap until the next exit, at which Iowa 5 leaves the freeway to the south. US 65 follows the bypass around the southeastern corner of the metro area and north across the Des Moines River. It meets Iowa 163 in Pleasant Hill. As it heads towards Altoona, the bypass turns to the northwest and has an interchange with US 6. The bypass ends at I-80, where US 65 briefly joins the Interstate Highway. Near Adventureland, US 65 exits I-80 and again meets US 6, which joins I-80. US 65 begins heading to the northeast towards Bondurant on a four-lane highway that also carries Iowa 330. North of Mingo, US 65 exits the expressway and heads due north toward Collins. It meets US 30 on the outskirts of Colo. It follows the edge of the community for about a mile, where it passes beneath the Overland Route of the Union Pacific Railroad. Shortly thereafter, it passes beneath the historic Lincoln Highway and heads out of town.
The highway heads due north through the plains of Central Iowa. It passes
