- 1976 – As part of a series of highway renumberings, the Nevada Department of Transportation commissioned Nevada State Route 604, the undisputed most famous highway in the world.
- April 16, 1983 – Drivers along U.S. Route 6 in Utah at Thistle who wondered "can faith really move mountains?" received an answer.
- August 1, 1984 – The United States Navy launched a torpedo attack on Denver. No people were hurt but several cars were caught in a Mousetrap
- 1992 – Pennsylvania Route 61 is relocated because the original alignment was a really smokin' drive that was too hot to handle.
- April 1, 1957 – The Pennsylvania Turnpike Northeast Extension opens between Emerald and PA 315 near Pittston
- April 2, 1969 – The middle section of New York's Interstate 84 is extended east from the Taconic State Parkway to NY 311
- April 3, 1965 – US 611 is moved off I-80 in New Jersey and back into Pennsylvania, replacing US 611 Alt
- April 4, 1956 – The first section of the Newark Bay Extension of the New Jersey Turnpike opens west of Bayonne
- April 5, 1987 – The Schoharie Creek Bridge over the New York State Thruway collapses, killing 10
- April 7, 1953 – The Kansas Turnpike Act, which defines the Kansas Turnpike between the Oklahoma border and Kansas City, becomes effective
- April 10, 2024 – Open road tolling is introduced along the Ohio Turnpike.
- April 11, 1960 – New York's Adirondack Northway is extended from Latham to Clifton Park
- April 14, 1976 – The Union County section of Interstate 78 in New Jersey is extended within Union from NJ 124 to the Garden State Parkway
- April 29, 1939 – An urban boulevard, called the Major Deegan Boulevard, is opened, connecting the Triborough Bridge to the Grand Concourse in the Bronx, New York
- April 30, 1959 – Corning, New York's Denison Parkway is extended to Riverside
