Route 117 was one of the original Rhode Island State highways, instated in 1922. Its alignment has changed little since that time; the most major change happened in the late 1990s, when Route 117's eastern terminus was cut back. Originally, Route 117 stayed with Broad Street through Cranston and into Providence, ending at U.S. 1. The reason the eastern terminus was trimmed back is unclear.

Between 1947 and 1951, US 1 bypassed downtown Apponaug on the road now known as Veterans' Memorial Drive. In the 1970's, this and Post Road were incorporated into a one-way system with Greenwich Road, causing westbound traffic of Route 117 to bypass the town.[2] A project called the Apponaug Circulator was completed in 2017 to eliminate this system and fully bypass the downtown. Through this project, Veterans' Memorial Drive was converted into a two-lane road, and was extended east to the intersection of Routes 115 and 117. From here east to the intersection of Post Road and Shore Road, four roundabouts were installed, and a fifth was installed downtown at Post Road and Greenwich Road. As a result, Route 117 was realigned completely along Veterans' Memorial Drive, and Post Road through town was downgraded to a residential street.[3]
