State Route 589 (SR 589) is a short, unsigned east-west state highway in Las Vegas, Nevada. It runs along Sahara Avenue between Rancho Drive and Northbridge Lane, a distance of 0.471 miles (0.758 km).[1] The route covers a short portion of roadway through and on either side of the interchange with Interstate 15.
Formerly, SR 589 extended through a much longer portion of the Las Vegas Valley. It began at SR 595 (Rainbow Boulevard), extending eastward along Sahara Avenue to SR 612 (Nellis Boulevard), a distance of 10.023 miles (16.130 km).[2] The route was cut back to its present extent in 2019.

SR 589 begins in the west at Sahara Avenue's intersection with Rancho Drive, a north–south arterial from which the ramp to southbound I-15 can be accessed. The Palace Station casino is located on the southwest corner of this intersection. From Rancho Drive, the SR 589 designation proceeds east along Sahara Avenue through the interchange with I-15. It then crosses a bridge carrying it over Western Avenue, railroad tracks, and Industrial Road. The SR 589 designation ends at a right-in/right-out intersection, only accessible to and from the westbound roadway, with Northbridge Lane (signed by Las Vegas as Tam Drive).[3]
History
The road now called Sahara Avenue was originally called San Francisco Avenue. It was later renamed[when?] to Sahara Avenue after the Sahara Hotel and Casino, located at the road's intersection with Las Vegas Boulevard. This intersection is typically considered the northern boundary of the Las Vegas Strip.
In the 1960s, city planners envisioned construction of an expressway along Sahara to Rainbow Boulevard.[citation needed]
Prior to 2019, SR 589 began in the western Las Vegas Valley at the intersection of Sahara Avenue and Rainbow Boulevard (SR 595). From there, the route continued due east to cross I-15 and Las Vegas Boulevard. SR 589 proceeded further east to cross Fremont Street/Boulder Highway (SR 582), entering the unincorporated town of Sunrise Manor. There, it passed under I-515/US 93/US 95 and terminated at Nellis Boulevard (SR 612). Through much of the Las Vegas area, SR 589 comprised the southern boundary of the City of Las Vegas.
The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) removed most of SR 589 from its maintenance logs by the beginning of 2019,[4] and turned ownership of the roadway over to the City of Las Vegas and Clark County. The current segment of SR 589 was retained by the state to maintain control of access to I-15.[5]
