The Marquette County Road System in Marquette County, Michigan, encompasses all 1,152.17 miles (1,854.24 km) of county roads maintained by the Marquette County Road Commission (MCRC). As with all other counties in the state, the commission maintains all roadways within its jurisdiction that are not state trunkline highways nor city or village streets. These roadways are then divided into primary or local classifications under Public Act 51 of 1951.

Primary county roads are assigned a three-digit number in the 400s, 500s or 600s based on a grid at the state level, like County Road 510 (CR 510). CR 480 is the only primary county road designated within one of the cities in the county. Three primary county roads carry lettered designations like local county roads. There are 284.47 miles (457.81 km) of primary county roads in the county.

Local county roads are assigned a two- or three-letter designation, and designations change when crossing township lines. The first letter of the designation for a segment of local county road corresponds to the township in which it is located, starting with A for Champion Township and ending with T in West Branch Township. Thus Triple A Road is County Road AAA (Co. Rd. AAA) in Champion Township, but Co. Rd. KAA in Powell Township. There are 867.70 miles (1,396.43 km) of local county roads in the county.

Primary county roads

Primary county roads have a three-digit numerical designation. They may also have a separate road name for address purposes. Numbers are assigned in the 400s, 500s and low 600s. Additionally, three other roads with lettered designations, which are typically used for local county roads, have been classified as primary county roads. There are 284.47 miles (457.81 km) of primary county roads in the county.[1][2] The roads are signed with the square marker M1-5a from the Michigan version of the Standard Highway Signs manual.[3]

Local county roads

The first letter of a local county road's designation corresponds to the township where it is located. Designations change when a road crosses a township line. Not all local county roads have names; some only use their lettered designations. In addition to the local county roads in the 19 townships, there is one section of Co. Rd. HB that crosses into the City of Marquette and remains under county maintenance; all other local county road designations end at city lines. There are 867.70 miles (1,396.43 km) of local county roads.
