State Road 74 (AR 74) is a former east–west state highway in Northwest Arkansas. The route ran from U.S. Route 71 (US 71) in Winslow to AR 16 at Crosses. Created during the initial 1926 Arkansas state highway numbering, AR 74 was deleted by the Arkansas General Assembly in 1951 in exchange for creation two other highways in the area. The route was maintained by the Arkansas Highway Department (AHD).
Route description
The highway began at an intersection with US 71 in the small town of Winslow in the Boston Mountains section of the Ozarks. It ran east through the Ozark National Forest along present-day Washington County Route 38 (CR 38, Sunset Road) to the unincorporated community of Sunset. The highway continued to wind east through the mountains to enter Madison County.[3] Now running along present-day Madison CR 4036, the highway turned north at the unincorporated community of Health to follow CR 4035 to Brannon. At Brannon, the highway turned onto present-day AR 295 to AR 16 at Crosses.[4]
History
State Road 74 was created during the 1926 Arkansas state highway numbering. It was deleted by the Arkansas General Assembly on March 19, 1951 in exchange for creating a new alignment of AR 74 between Elkins and Huntsville and extending AR 112 to AR 68 (now US 412) in Tontitown.[1]
The eastern part of the route was restored to the Arkansas highway system in 1973 as AR 295.
