Highway 288 (AR 288) is a former east–west state highway in Franklin County, Arkansas. The route was created along county roads in 1973, extended in 1974, and deleted in 1976; partially replaced by AR 60. It was maintained by the Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department (AHTD).
Route description
The designation began at a junction with AR 22 in the small town of Branch within the Arkansas River Valley. The route ran north as Williams Street, exiting the city limits and entering a rural area of agriculture and mining land uses. It turned onto Holland Road, crossing Perry Creek before turning onto Hampton Road and running as a section line road for 1 mile (1.6 km). It then turned briefly onto Bradberry Road before winding northeast to Peter Pender, where it terminated at AR 41.
History
In 1973, the Arkansas General Assembly passed Act 9 of 1973. The act directed county judges and legislators to designate up to 12 miles (19 km) of county roads as state highways in each county.[3] Under this act, the Arkansas State Highway Commission created a new segment of AR 288 from Branch north 3 miles (4.8 km) on March 28, 1973.[1] The route was extended east along county roads to Peter Pender on February 27, 1974.[4]
On July 29, 1976, the Commission granted a request by Franklin County to decommission AR 288 in favor of an extension of AR 60 from AR 217 east to Peter Pender. As part of the request, the segment added to the state highway system in 1974 was renumbered to AR 60.[2]
