This template facilitates creating a non-free or fair use media rationale with the necessary components. Please read Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline before using this template.
Usage
To use the template, copy the empty template to an image or other media file (see Help:Files) where the content is regarded to be non-free, and fill in applicable fields (described below). The parameters must be capitalized.
{{Non-free use rationale | Article = | Description = | Source = | Portion = | Low resolution = | Purpose = | Replaceability = | Other information = }}
Article
- The exact name of the Wikipedia article in which the media is to be used (unlinked, as the template will link automatically).
Description
- A description of the copyrighted material. Always include the copyright holder here.
Source
- Where you acquired the copyrighted material, or how you recreated it.
Portion
- How much copyrighted material is used? The amount used must not make the work as a whole less valuable to the copyright holder.
Low resolution
- Is the material in a lower resolution that would be unlikely to impact the copyright owner's ability to resell or otherwise profit from the work? For raster images, this would be strictly the resolution (in pixels) of the picture used; for vector graphics, this would involve the level of detail in the image; for audio, this would be the bit rate and sample resolution used.
Purpose
- How does the media contribute significantly to the article(s) in which it is used? The use of the media must not interfere with the media's original purpose.
Replaceability
- Explain why sourced text or equivalent free content media (perhaps to be obtained or created) could not adequately convey the article subject. However, if a free content or derivative found, then it is used to explain is it replaceable or not. If replaceable, explain why it can be replaced and a free derivative's link or nominate it for speedy deletion as a violation of the first criterion of non-free content criteria.
Other information
- If applicable, provide any other information that justifies the current use of this non-free media. This variable is optional, and can be blank or removed.
Example
{{Non-free use rationale |Article=Highway Capacity Manual |Description=This image is an identification book cover illustration for a modern book (a professional handbook) |Source=Digital scan of the cover from a book of my property |Portion=Front cover |Low_resolution=It is a lower resolution scan suitable for such illustration but little else. |Purpose=Identification book cover illustration for the article about this traffic engineering handbook |Replaceability=Being a modern book (published in 2008) it is not replaceable by a free image |other_information=Publish by the Transportation Research Board, US. }}
