For copyrighted images to be used on Wikipedia in accordance with the non-free use policy, they must meet all ten requirements of the Wikipedia:Non-free content criteria. This template and others like it allow for a standardized way of providing this information. This template is an alternate to the {{Non-free use rationale}} template.

This template is designed to be used in conjunction with one or more instances of the {{Non-free media rationale}}.

On any non-free image's description page, each article which uses that image must be noted, and must be given its own non-free use rationale. The {{Non-free use rationale}} template is too cumbersome for those images which appear in multiple articles – in such instances, that template must be duplicated in its entirety for each use, thus generating unnecessary redundancy. This alternative template allows for the display of all necessary information without any redundancy.

Usage

Copy the following code and paste onto the appropriate image description page.

Although {{Non-free media data}} (this template) need only be used once per image, a completed {{Non-free media rationale}} template must be used for each article in which the image is used.

Remember that each image must also be tagged with a non-free image copyright tag.

Parameter Explanation
Description Description of image, including but not limited to applicable film, series, book, magazine, performer(s), character(s), or other elements, as well as date where possible.
Source Source of image, referencing external site if applicable, and original work/source if not specified elsewhere.
Author Name of person(s) or corporate entities who are the creators of this work or the owners of the copyright.
Portion How much copyrighted material is used; the amount used must not make the work as a whole less valuable to the copyright holder.
Low resolution Images must generally be of low resolution. The rule of thumb for raster images is no more than 300 pixels in width or height, which ensures that the image's resolution is less than 0.1 megapixels. If you are using an image of higher resolution, please explain why. If the image is 0.1 megapixels or less, just put "Yes". It only applies to cases where hi-res version is profitable (e.g. hi-res photo or poster may be printed, as opposed to low-res version, but the license fee must be paid), and does not apply to screenshots or simple graphics (vector graphics technically doesn't even have resolution).
Other information Optional parameter; if applicable, any other information about the media that may apply, including specific copyright information.
Article Specific article in which image is used, and to which purpose/rationale applies.
Purpose How the media contributes significantly to the article(s) in which it is used, and how the use of the media does not interfere with the media's original purpose.
Replaceability Explain why no free equivalent could reasonably be obtained or created to replace this media.
