Karnataka State Highway 93 (KA SH 93) (Kannada: ರಾಜ್ಯ ಹೆದ್ದಾರಿ-93ರ, romanized: Rājya heddāri-93ra), colloquially known as the Khanapur–Talaguppa Road (Kannada: ತಾಳಗುಪ್ಪ - ಖಾನಾಪುರ ರಾಜ್ಯ ಹೆದ್ದಾರಿ), is a regional road which runs through a large part of the Uttara Kannada District and connects several cities such as Yellapur, Sirsi and Siddapur.

History

The SH93 runs through several of the forest areas of Uttara Kannada that have been historically inhabited by Havyaka Brahmin, Namadhari Naik, Marathi and Muslim communities, this area is also characterized by several spice gardens.[a]

In the 1930s, following several infrastructure improvement projects around India, the government allocated approximately 253876 Indian rupees for the improvement of this state highway.[3]

By the end of 2021, a project was approved to widen the lanes of SH93, specifically around the city of Sirsi located in the Uttara Kannada District.[b] In mid 2022, part of the infrastructure was affected following rains in the coastal part of Karnataka, this partially affected traffic around SH93 specifically around the rural locality of Ashisar (Kannada: ಅಶೀಸರ), where several fallen trees were reported to have partially blocked the road.[5]

The Karnataka legislature confirmed that in 2022 progress had been made in improving the road specifically around Sirsi between km 131.99 and 150.00 as part of Phase II.[6]

In mid 2024, part of SH93 was affected after heavy rains around Alnavar located in the Dharwad district, one of the main causes contributing to the flooding was after the construction processes of the pipeline that will change the water supply originating from the Kali River, where the ground had to be partially deformed.[7]

It includes the forest lands of eleven villages with an area of thirty-two square miles and a population of about 1820, almost entirely Haviks, Marathas, and Halepaiks with a few Musalmans. Nearly the whole area is of leaf-shedding forests a good deal broken by spice gardens and rich cultivation" (Page 51)[2]
