State Route 702 (SR 702) is an unsigned highway in Brilliant. Most of the routing consists of the Wellsburg Bridge over the Ohio River with a connector along 3rd Street to SR 7. The highway, running a total of 0.636 miles (1.024 km), is entirely within Wells Township, Jefferson County.
Route description
SR 702 begins at the end of the offramp from northbound SR 7 in Wells Township. The road continues to the southwest as Jefferson County Route 7E. SR 702 heads east-northeast, first past the onramp to SR 7, under the mainline of SR 7, and the southbound SR 7 ramps where the latter is a signalized intersection. The state highway travels along the two-lane 3rd Street through a built-up section in Brilliant past a gas station, other businesses, and houses. At its intersection with Cleaver Street, SR 702 turns to the southeast towards the Wellsburg Bridge on a two-lane road with a wide striped median center. It crosses over SR 7 before it starts crossing the Wellsville Bridge, a tied-arch bridge over the Ohio River. Towards the center of the bridge, SR 702 ends at the West Virginia state line. The road continues as CR 2/23 before ending at West Virginia Route 2 at the eastern foot of the bridge in an unincorporated area of Brooke County south of Wellsburg.[2]
History
The Wellsburg Bridge began construction in 2019.[3] By 2021, the bridge had received the designation of SR 702.[4] The bridge opened on September 21, 2023.[3] As of October 2023, the highway is unsigned except for small markers at the start of the bridge intended for maintenance purposes.[2]
The portion of SR 702 that runs along 3rd Street was originally part of SR 7.[5]
This route is unrelated to another SR 702 that existed in Logan County from 1940 to 1977.
