Iowa Highway 109 (Iowa 109) was a state highway in Johnson County. It ran from the intersection of South Augusta Avenue and Center Street and ran north along Augusta Avenue for approximately 1+1⁄4 miles (2.0 km) until it reached U.S. Highway 6 north of the town.
Route description
Iowa 109 began at the intersection of S. Augusta Avenue and Center Street just south of downtown Oxford. Immediately, there was a bridge crossing Rhine Creek. The downtown area is lined with two-story brick buildings from the late-19th and early-20th centuries. The downtown area was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997As it headed north out of the town, it passed through a neighborhood of single-family homes. For the last 7⁄8 mi (1.4 km) of the route, the highway cut through rolling hills of farmland dotted by homes. It ended at an intersection with US 6 roughly midway between Homestead and Tiffin.[2]
History
Iowa 109 first appeared on the state highway map in 1923. It existed in the same form throughout its 80-year existence, a short spur from US 6 into Oxford.[3]. In 2002, more than 700 miles (1,100 km) of low-traffic state highways, including Iowa 109, were identified by the Iowa Department of Transportation (Iowa DOT) because they primarily served local traffic. Typically, when Iowa DOT wished to transfer a road to a county or locality, both parties had to agree to terms and the DOT would have to either improve the road or give money to the other party to maintain the road.[4] However, with the significant mileage the DOT wished to turn over, the Iowa General Assembly passed a law which granted the DOT a one-time exemption from the transfer rules effective July 1, 2003.[5] Iowa 109 was replaced by CR W38 outside of Oxford.[6]
Major intersections
The entire route was in Johnson County.
