Highway 29,[a] commonly known as the Fayoum Desert Road[b] (Arabic: طريق الفيوم الصحراوي), is a primary road that connects the capital city of Cairo with several places in Fayoum Governorate such as the Sinnuris district in Central Egypt. The road runs specifically through the northeastern part of the El-Fayoum depression, an area that is used for the development of agriculture in the region.[3]
History
Following several land developments around the road in the Giza Governorate between the 2000s and 2010s led to a considerable increase in wastes around world heritage sites and the subsequent construction of concrete barriers for the protection of archaeological sites in the region.[4] In 2013, Egypt's Ministry of Transport together with the local government of Fayoum completed several projects to expand the third lane for the road between Cairo and Fayoum, which cost around 75 million Egyptian pounds.[5] In 2017, the Ministry of Transportation started the construction of the new bridge at Km 26, additionally the project included the addition of traffic cameras and better signage for this part of the Fayoum road.[6]
In mid-2020, a subsidiary of Hassan Allam Holding was awarded the contract for the development and connection of the Fayoum Road to the Central Ring Road in Cairo.[7]
Route
Giza Governorate
The Highway starts at El-Remaya Square (Arabic: ميدان الرماية) in Al Haram. It then heads southwest, passing through areas around the Pyramids of Giza until it reaches the southern urban area of the 6th of October city. In addition, bridges have been constructed on the Highway 29 for the development of the Ain Sokhna - Alamein Railway (Arabic: سكة حديد العين السخنة - العلمين), which specifically bypasses the October Gardens District.[8]
Afterwards, the road heads towards the deserted area of Giza until it reaches the Fayoum Road Cemetery (Arabic: مقابر طريق الفيوم).
Fayoum Governorate
The road goes much further south connected the area around the Kazem Oshim Military Airport (Arabic: مطار كزم اوشيم الحربي). Then the route goes to the archaeological site of the Karanis Site Museum located in the town of Tamiya. The western part of the Highway 29 connecting Tamiya has been subjected to archaeological investigations of the Necropolis of Karanis.[9] The route heads much further south until it reaches the urban area of Sinnuris and then connects with the towns of Biyahmu and Al Alam.
