Highway 15,[a] colloquially known as Ismailia Desert Road (Arabic: طريق الإسماعيلية الصحراوي), is a primary road located in the central part of Egypt, that specifically connects the capital city with areas in the Eastern desert.[3] Highway 15 serves as one of the most important routes for transportation between various points in the city of El-Obour located in the Governorate of Qalyubia.[4] The highway is subdivided into two important parts which is the Cairo - Ismailia section that passes through the eastern parts of the desert and the Ismailia - Port Said section that runs along the Suez Canal area in the northern part of the country.
This route serves mainly for the use of goods as well as connecting the industrial zones of Egypt's eastern ports with the capital.[5]
History
In September 2018, the intersectional bridge between Middle Ring and Ismailia roads in the eastern part of Cairo was officially inaugurated, which included 8 different lanes.[6] In 2020, the Egyptian company Orascom Construction started projects for the maintenance of Highway 15 specifying the renovation of asphalt to increase the connection between various points such as the Saad Eldin Elshzly corridor in the 10th Ramadan City located in Sharqia Governorate.[7]
Route
Cairo Governorate
The road starts in the suburb of Nozha (Arabic: النزهة) in the eastern part of the Governorate of Cairo, then the road goes much further east until it crosses the Cairo Ring Road. Then, Highway 15 heads towards the Misr International University campus to the intersection with Middle Ring Road. Subsequently, the route heads much further north to intersect with the Regional Ring Road.
Sharqia Governorate
The route goes much further to the northeast, traveling through the southern part of the 10th Ramadan City.
Ismailia Governorate
The road heads east of the governorate crossing several roads that connect the city of Fayed, as well as historical sites such as El Habib Monastery (Arabic: دير الحبيب) located at Km 90. The route then goes much further north across the Manayef Bridge (Arabic: كوبري المنايف)[8] to the industrial zone of Ismailia.
The route goes much further north crossing through Al-ʿAbbāsiyyah Canal and connects with the areas around Abu Khalifah to the port of Qantara Sharq.
