The State Highway 93 (SH93) (Kannada: ಹೆದ್ದಾರಿ-93ರ), colloquially known as the Khanapur Talaguppa Road (Kannada: ತಾಳಗುಪ್ಪ - ಖಾನಾಪುರ ರಾಜ್ಯ ಹೆದ್ದಾರಿ), is a regional highway located in the center of the Indian state of Karnataka. The road is in total about 296 kilometers long.[1]
History
In the 1930s, following several infrastructure improvement projects around India, the government allocated approximately 253876 Indian rupees for the improvement of this state highway.[2]
By the end of 2021, a project was approved to widen the lanes of SH93, specifically around the town of Sirsi located in the Uttara Kannada District.[a]
The Karnataka legislature confirmed that in 2022 progress had been made in improving the road specifically around Sirsi between km 131.99 and 150.00 as part of Phase II.[4]
In mid 2024, part of SH93 was affected after heavy rains around Alnavar located in the Dharwad district, one of the main causes contributing to the flooding was after the construction processes of the pipeline that will change the water supply originating from the Kali River, where the ground had to be partially deformed.[5]
Route description
Karnataka State
The State Highway passes around several important tourist sites such as the Karambal Tree Park located in the Belagavi District, this park is home to the Sri Dhondadeva Devasthana, a large rock formation.[6] The route goes much further south and crosses around Mandegali Reservoir (Kannada: ಮಂಡೇಲಿ ರಿಸರ್ವಾಯರ್).[7]
SH93 goes much further south, crossing around Ghomari Lake and then heads to the Alnavar metropolitan area (Kannada: ಅಳ್ನಾವರ). Subsequently, the state highway crosses the Tattihalla river.[8]
In this section, the state highway passes around the forest and specifically goes much further south where it intersects with NH52 and then heads towards the urban center of Yellapur. Between the Yellapur and Sirsi sections, SH93 has to pass around the Bedti River (Kannada: ಬೇಡ್ತಿ ಹೊಳೆ).[9] The road goes much further south connecting the town of Manchikere (Kannada: ಮಂಚಿಕೇರಿ),[b] where SH93 passes around Shri Nagachowdeshwari Temple (Kannada: ಶ್ರೀ ನಾಗಚೌಡೇಶ್ವರಿ ದೇವಿ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನ).[11] This area of the Yellapur Taluk is characterized by several archeological sites where the SH93 passes, among them are Purdukan where several ancient pillars were excavated around the Kampli area.[c]
The route heads much further south and crosses the hilly area of the rural locality of Taragod (Kannada: ತಾರಗೋಡ), specifically where the Kailsa Gudda Temple (Kannada: ಕೈಲಾಸ ಗುಡ್ಡ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನ)[13][14] is located.
From this point, the SH93 partially runs through the northern part of the Sirsi metropolitan area. In this section, SH93 connects the rural localities of Kansur and Tyagali.[d] Additionally, the locality of Nidagod is characterized by its stone quarries.[16]
The road then passes through the urban center of Siddapur. The route goes much further south, crossing around the rural locality of Kavanchuru and subsequently with Hosalli (Kannada: ಹೊಸಳ್ಳಿ), where SH93 passes around the local mosque. In the last sections, SH93 heads to Talaguppa where it intersects with NH69.
