State Route 187 (SR 187) is a state highway in the U.S. state of California that formerly ran along Venice Boulevard in Los Angeles from Lincoln Boulevard (State Route 1) in Venice to Interstate 10 in the South Robertson district.
Route description
Proceeding easterly, Venice Boulevard assumed the designation California State Route 187 at Lincoln Boulevard (State Route 1). The route then passes through the Mar Vista neighborhood. Further east, it briefly forms the boundary between Palms and Culver City and passes near Sony Pictures Studios. Continuing northeast into the South Robertson neighborhood of Los Angeles, the SR 187 designation terminated at the intersection with Cadillac Avenue and the ramp carrying traffic from westbound I-10.[2]
The portion between I-10 and Cadillac Avenue is still inventoried by Caltrans as of late 2024.[1]
SR 187 is part of the National Highway System,[3] a network of highways that are considered essential to the country's economy, defense, and mobility by the Federal Highway Administration.[4]
History
Route 163 was defined in 1961 as a route from the ocean in Santa Monica to Route 173, routed along Pacific Avenue and Venice Boulevard.[5] This was redefined as SR 187 in the 1964 state highway renumbering.[6] In 1988, the part of SR 187 in Santa Monica was removed from the state highway system.[7] The part of the route from the southern boundary of Santa Monica to Lincoln Boulevard was removed in 1994.[8] In 2015, the entire length of Route 187 was made eligible for relinquishment to the City of Los Angeles. If a relinquishment occurred, the state highway was to cease to exist.[9] In October 2016, the California Transportation Commission approved the relinquishment of SR 187 from SR 1 to I-10.[10]
Major intersections
Except where prefixed with a letter, postmiles were measured on the road as it was in 1964, based on the alignment that existed at the time, and do not necessarily reflect current mileage. R reflects a realignment in the route since then, M indicates a second realignment, L refers to an overlap due to a correction or change, and T indicates postmiles classified as temporary ( ).[12] Segments that remain unconstructed or have been relinquished to local control may be omitted.
