State Route 83 (SR 83) is a scenic state highway in southern Arizona, stretching from its junction with Interstate 10 near Vail south to Parker Canyon Lake. It passes through sparsely populated areas of Pima, Cochise and Santa Cruz Counties, passing through the wine towns of Sonoita and Elgin. SR 83 was one of the original numbered highways established in 1927, originally running between SR 82 in Sonoita and U.S. Route 80 (US 80) in Vail. The highway was extended to its current southern terminus at Parker Canyon Lake in 1965.
Route description
The southern terminus of State Route 83 (SR 83) is located at the entrance to Parker Canyon Lake. It heads northwest from the lake and passes through Canelo and Sonoita before it reaches a four–way intersection with SR 82, at the northern extent of Sonoita. The highway continues north from this intersection, exiting Santa Cruz County and enters Pima County. SR 83 reaches its northern terminus at an interchange with Interstate 10 (I-10) exit 281 and Marsh Station Road in Vail, southeast of Tucson.[1][3]
History
State Route 83 (SR 83) was originally commissioned on September 9, 1927, coinciding with the creation of Arizona's numbering system, originally terminating at SR 82 in Sonoita, and ending at U.S. Route 80 (US 80) near Vail.[4] The total length of SR 83 as originally designated was 27.80 miles (44.74 km).[5] On July 7, 1965, SR 83 was extended south through Canelo to its current southern terminus at Parker Canyon Lake.[6]
