State Route 158 (SR 158) is a 22.02-mile-long (35.44 km) state highway in northern Mobile County in the southwestern corner of the U.S. state of Alabama. The western terminus of the highway is at the Mississippi/Alabama state line. The eastern terminus of the highway is at an intersection with U.S. Route 43 (US 43) at Saraland. The route will eventually become part of US 98 west of Mobile to the Mississippi state line as a four-lane bypass of Semmes.[2]
Route description
SR 158 serves as a connector route between Interstate 65 (I-65) and US 45/US 98 to the west and US 43 to the east. It begins as a four-lane highway that enters Alabama from Mississippi. It then narrows to two lanes for several miles before again widening back to four lanes near its intersection with Newburn Road in Semmes. SR 158 connects Semmes with the University of Mobile and Saraland. The route widens to five lanes at its intersection with SR 213 near its interchange with I-65 at exit 13. East of the interstate highway, the highway narrows to two lanes as it continues to its intersection with US 43.
History
SR 158 was extended from its former western terminus at Newburn road to US 98. It was built to serve as a bypass of US 98. Construction began in 2017 and was completed on October 17, 2023.[3] Although the route is planned to be 4 lanes from the Mississippi/Alabama state line all the way to its intersection with I-65, it is currently only 2 lanes between Wilmer and Semmes.
On October 12, 2023, ALDOT announced that the road would open to traffic from Lott Road all the way to the Mississippi state line. On October 17, 2023 at 12:00 PM, the road officially opened to traffic.[4]
Future
US 98 is expected to be re-routed along the route of SR 158. While the road is only 2 lanes for most of the center of its length, ALDOT has acquired enough easement to expand the road to 4 lanes in the future as funding becomes available.[5]
