Article names
From years of prior discussions, it has been determined that the ideal article naming scheme is [Province] [Route/Highway] [#], with route or highway determined based on the provincial nomenclature. Some systems have their own names (i.e. The King's Highway in Ontario), use of these may result in confusion and mislabeling in searches.
Article layout
As described in-depth at WikiProject Highways, the format of road articles (excluding local roads/streets) is as follows, with section titles in bold:
- Lead/lede – A summary of the article and the infobox
- Route description – A description of the entire highway and what it provides access to, including significant points of interest such as parks, First Nations reserves, etc. The description should be adjusted based on the length of the route (i.e. short routes get turn by turn descriptions, while long routes get generalised descriptions of the regions they pass through)
- History – This can cover the history of the highway designation, and if available, the history before it was established that led to its importance
- Future (optional) – If there is planned widening, expansion, extensions, etc.
- Major intersections or Exit list – Only use "Exit list" for routes where a majority of the crossroads are grade-separated. This is a table-based diagram of the intersecting routes along a road, and should follow the guideline set out in AA:RJL.
- Suffixed routes – many highways have suffixed routes (ex. Highway 2A). While these are often worthy of independent articles, some may be better suited for inclusion with the parent route article.

- Images – Do not set fixed widths for standard 1:1 (or mostly square) photographs. Wide images, diagrams, and animations are obvious exceptions, and should be handled on a case-by-case basis.
Notability
It has been routinely established that highways designated/numbered by a provincial highway department, including those that no longer are considered provincial highways, are notable for articles. County roads are generally not notable (unless they were previously highways). Local roads vary on a case-by-case basis and are not within the purview of this WikiProject (see WikiProject Canada Streets).
