The A164 is a road entirely in the East Riding of Yorkshire. It runs for 21 miles between Hessle and Driffield bypassing the town of Beverley. The road is designated as a Primary route between the junction with the A1079 on the Beverley Bypass and its southern terminus with the A15 just north of the Humber Bridge.
History
The route has altered from the original A164 designation. Originally beginning in the centre of Hull through Anlaby along what is now the B1231. Much of the route around Hull was built as a series of bypasses in the 1970s and 80s.[1] Originally the A164 went through the centre of Beverley however with the redirection of the route along the southern bypass in 2015 it now avoids the centre of Beverley instead multiplexing with the A1174 and A1035 roads.
Route
Hessle-Beverley
The A164 route begins at a roundabout just north of the Humber Bridge with the A15 towards South Humberside and the A63 alongside the A1105 into the centre of Hull. The road continues as a high quality single carriageway primary route bypassing Willerby and Cottingham. There are several roundabouts with local access roads alongside a short 1 mile section of dual carriageway between the B1231 and Castle Hill Hospital. The road then comes to the Grade separated junction with the A1079 where the road looses its primary status. The road then takes an easterly course along the new 'Mister Way' southern bypass towards a roundabout with the A1174. The A164 then multiplexes with the A1174 and A1035 roads around the eastern side of Beverley.
Beverley-Driffield
After the multiplex around Beverley, the A164 resumes at a roundabout on the northern edge of Beverley. The road is not as high quality as the road between Hull and Beverley and is a single carriageway secondary route. The road passes through the villages of Leconfield, Scorborough, Watton and Hutton Cranswick. The road reaches a small roundabout with an unclassified road that heads straight into Driffield. The A164 exits to the left towards its terminus at Kellythorpe Roundabout with the A614 road.
Safety
Between Hessle and Beverley the road is of a high quality much of it being national speed limit with occasional stretches of 40 mph and 50mph. Between Beverley and Driffield, the road is of a lower quality with many bends and passes directly through many settlements. The speed limit varies between national speed limit and 30 mph through the residential areas. In the European Road Assessment Programme (EuroRAP) survey, which gives all major roads in Europe a safety rating, the A164 is categorised as 'Medium risk'.[2]
