- Flooding from Hurricane Helene causes extensive damage to several highways in the region including a section of Interstate 40 near the North Carolina–Tennessee state line.
- The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission announces that an ongoing project to retrofit open road tolling on the Pennsylvania Turnpike will include improvements, and a possible rebuild to the interchange with Interstate 70 in Breezewood.
- Two new sections of Quebec Autoroute 85 near Saint-Honoré-de-Témiscouata open to traffic.
- NCDOT announces they will sign a freeway bypass around Goldsboro, North Carolina as Interstate 42.
- KDOT closes the eastbound Lewis and Clark Viaduct, which carries Interstate 70 across the Kansas River for urgent repairs, after bridge inspectors noticed failing gusset plates in the structure.
- Caltrans commits to continue to rebuild and not abandon the Big Sur Coast Highway in a CBS News special detailing the challenges of keeping California State Route 1 open, with landslides of increasing severity and frequency.
- A northbound HOV lane is extended on Interstate 5 between Everett and Marysville, Washington.
- A key piece of Interstate 69 opens to traffic which filled a gap and nearly completes the Indiana portion of the freeway.
- Virginia signs their portion of the Coalfields Expressway which was previously only signed in the West Virginia portion.
- Governor Gretchen Whitmer signs a bill imposing a speed limit of 15 miles per hour along M-185, which was the last highway in Michigan to not have a formal speed limit.
- The Charles Hall Ferry, which connects the two segments of Utah State Route 276, restarts limited service after being closed for 3 years due to low water levels in Lake Powell.
- The Palm and the Pine, a cedar and palm tree next to each other as an unofficial line between Southern and Northern California, will be removed as part of a reconstruction of California State Route 99. Caltrans will plant replacement trees along the new alignment.
- An oversize vehicle strikes a bridge along U.S. Route 6 in Pennsylvania in Troy Township, closing the road until further notice.
- A landslide on Wyoming Highway 22 at Teton Pass causes a part of the roadway to collapse, closing the road.
- Caltrans announces a paused safety improvement project will resume. The project affects the grade along US 395 over Conway Summit and will include wider shoulders, rumble strip median separating lanes, and lighting and space to implement a dedicated chain up area for when chain controls are in effect while crossing the pass.
- The Arizona Department of Transportation completes the reconstruction of a key bridge along Interstate 15 in Arizona in the remote Virgin River Gorge, fully reopening the freeway.
- A truck fire damages a bridge on Interstate 95 in Norwalk, Connecticut, resulting in a freeway closure of over three days.
- Open road tolling is introduced along the Ohio Turnpike.
- The technology included in a rebuilt portion of Interstate 94 in Michigan enters testing phase. The reconstruction was privately funded and includes features designed for a beta test to support guiding autonomous vehicles.
- A key portion of State Route 37, an expressway running along the northern shore of the San Pablo Bay in the northern extremity of the San Francisco Metropolitan Area will be fully closed on weekends in April for reconstruction, forcing motorists on a detour through Napa Valley

- Caltrans opens the Centennial Corridor, a freeway re-route of State Route 58 in downtown Bakersfield.
- A partial collapse of a culvert closes both directions of Interstate 82 near Wapato, Washington for several days.
- A turbo roundabout opens at the intersection of State Route 25 and State Route 156 in San Benito County.
- The Utah Department of Transportation announces the grand opening of the West Davis Corridor (State Route 177) for January 6.
2023
- The Arizona Department of Transportation announces a new direct freeway to freeway connection will be built in Kingman to connect US 93 (future I-11) with I-40 starting in 2024.
- The Federal Highway Administration releases the 11th edition of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
- A new divided highway opens carrying British Columbia Highway 1 and the Trans-Canada Highway through Kicking Horse Canyon.
- A new section of the North Spokane Corridor (future U.S. Route 395) opens in Spokane, Washington.
- Interstate 10 in downtown Los Angeles was shut down for over a week as a result of a warehouse fire that damaged concrete piers supporting the highway.
- Traffic on Interstate 95 in Philadelphia is moved from the temporary roadway built on site onto new permanent bridges less than five months after the 2023 Interstate 95 highway collapse.
- The Arkansas Department of Transportation approved an extension of U.S. Route 78 along 140 miles (230 km) of existing highways between Jonesboro and the Tennessee border.
- State Route 158 near Mobile opens to traffic after nearly 20 years of planning and construction.
- Highway 400 closes after a truck overturns near Aurora, Ontario, spilling hundreds of pounds of celery across the southbound lanes.
- A six-day closure of the Bainbridge Island ferry (carrying State Route 305 from Seattle) to vehicles and bicycles begins as part of terminal improvements.
- The Interstate 95 express lanes in Virginia are extended south by 10 miles (16 km) to Fredericksburg.
- The final sections of the old I-74 Bridge carrying Interstate 74 between Iowa and Illinois are demolished by explosives.
