The Ecuador Highway 45 (E45), colloquially known as Troncal Amazónica, is a national highway that runs through the extreme eastern part of the country, specifically between the provinces of Sucumbíos and Zamora-Chinchipe.
The road starts at the International Bridge with Colombia on the San Miguel River in the Province of Sucumbíos while its end point is located between the Zamora Chinchipe-Loja Border.[1]
History
The first attempts to connect parts of the Amazonian regions of Ecuador date back to the 1940s by Royal Dutch Shell to connect oil extraction zones. Between the 1970s and 1980s, the Ecuadorian government consolidated the first steps for the road network in the Amazon.[2] Among the mining sites that Route E45 has connected are Fruta del Norte and Proyector Mirador in the Province of Zamora Chinchipe, which are used for gold mining.[3]
The national highway has been affected following changes in the courses of nearby rivers in several sectors of the Provinces of Sucumbíos, Napo and Orellana in 2023.[4] In 2024, the project to remodel part of the roads was implemented after the damage caused by the rains last year, where about 4 million dollars were allocated to renovate the sectors between Lago Agrio in Sucumbíos to Baeza in Napo.[5]
Route
Sucumbíos
The E45 helps connect the capital city of the province of Sucumbíos, Nueva Loja, with the rest of the country.[6] The section of the E45 that connects the Amazonian provinces of Sucumbíos and Orellana with the country's capital passes close to the course of the Coca River, where the erosion of the river has affected part of the sections of the E45.[7]
Napo
The E45 road helps to connect the southern areas of the province of Sucumbíos with the northern areas of Napo,[8] specifically in the border locality of San Rafael. Additionally, the state highway connects the areas of the Reventador Volcano located in the Canton of Chaco and further southwest to Baeza,[9] from there the route goes much further south until you reach the urban centers of Achidona and the provincial capital, Tena.
Pastaza
The E45 is part of the primary road network of the Province of Pastaza, connecting the provincial capital of Puyo with the city of Tena to the north and the city of Macas to the south.[10] In addition, the state road helps connect the rural towns of Pitirishca, Veracruz/Indillama and Simon Bolivar/Mushullacta located in the southern areas of the province.[11]
Morona Santiago
Several sections of the E45 that runs through the province of Morona Santiago pass along the Upano River.[12] The E45 runs from north to south within the province, connecting the urban centers of Macas and Gualaquiza until reaching Chuchumbletza, bordering the province of Zamora Chinchipe.[13]
Zamora Chinchipe
The E45 connects the Canton of Pangui located in the northern part of the province,[14] where the route proceeds far to the southwest within the subdivision, connecting the cities of Yantzaza[15] and Zamora de los Alcaides until reaching the border with the province of Loja.
