The E40, also known as Transversal Austral, is a primary highway that connects the ports of Salinas and La Libertad in the Province of Santa Elena with the cities of Guayaquil and Cañar, and then goes to the Province of Morona-Santiago located in the Ecuadorian Amazon.
History
At the end of 2006, the provincial government of Guayas carried out the widening of several sectors of the E40 in the areas between Chongón and Santa Elena.[2]
From 2011 to 2014, the Ecuadorian Ministry of Transportation invested around USD 91 million (roughly equivalent to $117 million in 2025 dollars) to improve the E40 sector between the towns of Zhud and Suscal in the Province of Cañar.[3] In June 2020, several stretches of road connecting the town of Amaluza in the northeastern part of the province of Azuay had to be closed after flooding in the Jurupis Creek that caused several rock slides.[4] At the end of 2020, the Ecuadorian construction company “Concreto y Prefabricados” in collaboration with the Ministry of Transportation rehabilitated part of the provincial road system of Cañar, where rehabilitation work was carried out on the sections of the E40 connecting Zhud with Biblián.[5]
In mid-March 2024, work began to rehabilitate parts of the sections of E40 from Parroquia La Aurora to the Vicente Rocafuerte Bridge over the Duale River, this section of E40 is also known locally as Leon Febres Cordero Avenue and stretches approximately 7,40 km.[6] At the end of August 2024, the Ministry of Transportation and Public Works and Corporación Eléctrica del Ecuador agreed to repair several critical points around the sections of the E40 connecting San Pablo and Quebrada de Guayaquil.[7]
