Arkansas Highway 226 is a designation for two state highways in northeast Arkansas. The main segment of 26.447 miles (42.562 km) runs east from an intersection of U.S. Route 67/Arkansas Highway 367 to I-555/US 63/AR 18 in Jonesboro.[2][3] A short route of 2.38 miles (3.83 km) runs in rural Jackson County west of Tuckerman.[4]

Route description

Western Jackson County

AR 226 runs east from Jackson CR 278 to cross AR 17 to AR 37, where it terminates.

The route then runs due east near Swifton through AR 18 in Cash, also meeting AR 349 near Jonesboro. The highway curves south, meeting US 49/US 63 at an intersection, then follows US 49/US 63 east for 1.3 miles (2.1 kilometers), before turning north, passing AR 226S at Cash Highway. This spur route is an old alignment of AR 226, and serves as a short connector to AR 349. North of the intersection AR 226S, AR 226 winds northeasterly into Jonesboro, meeting I-555/US 63/AR 18 and terminating. The route is two-lane undivided for most of its length, passing through flat, square farmland.[5]

In 2012, construction was completed that widened four miles of the highway to a four-lane divided facility from the highway's intersection with U.S. 67 (Future I-57) to just west of Cash.[6] This was the first section of a larger plan that will ultimately widen Highway 226 to four lanes divided from U.S. 67 to U.S. 49 near Gibson.[7] Once completed, this widening project will give motorists a four-lane, divided route the entire length from Little Rock to Jonesboro.

History

The route became a state highway in 1958, traveling from an area south of Swifton east to Gibson. AR 226 was later extended to Jonesboro, including a concurrency with AR 39 (now US 49). When US 49 replaced AR 39 around 1980, AR 226 was split into its current alignment and AR 226S. The short Jackson County segment was added to the system in 1996.[1]

Had I-30 been extended, there were plans to upgrade AR 226 to Interstate standards and designate it as "Interstate 730".[8][9]

Arkansas Highway 226 Business is a business route in Cash. The route is 0.838 miles (1.349 kilometers) long, with both its western and eastern termini being dead ends. AR 226B intersects only one other highway, which is AR 18. Despite being a business route of AR 226, AR 226B never intersects or connects directly with its parent route. Both AR 18 and County Road 241 serve as connections to AR 226 proper. This business route was originally a section of AR 226. Following the completion of a four-lane divided highway bypass around Cash, the old section of AR 226 was cut off from the main route and redesignated as AR 226B on August 6, 2015.

Arkansas Highway 226 Spur is a spur route in Jonesboro. The spur route is 1.458 miles (2.346 kilometers) long, and connects AR 349 to AR 226.[2] The route was created on August 6, 2015, after AR 226 was rerouted further south towards Gibson, to directly connect with US 49. The old section of AR 226 between the new alignment and the original AR 226S was redesignated as an extension of AR 349 and a new AR 226S, with the original spur route becoming part of AR 226 proper.[11]

Arkansas Highway 226 Spur was a spur route in Jonesboro. Known locally as Wood Springs Road, the route was 1.03 miles (1.66 kilometers) in length.[12] The spur route was decommissioned on August 6, 2015, becoming part of its re-routed parent route, AR 226.[11]
