Per policy this not expected to be completed any time soon.(to give users like Fredddie a break) Finally, I noticed the requests policy does not specify a certain time span for users making multiple large requests, so it should be in consideration to standardize the amount of time that users have to wait between bulk requests. List of South Carolina highways

In an attempt to build a better highway list for South Carolina, we will some shields from its original 1922-1948 form. Here is an example from Time and Seasons website. For the first batch, I am requesting the following: 1, 3, 7, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 21, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 29 and 30. After I have this first small batch, I'll incorporate it in the List of South Carolina Highways and go from there (this is being done in my sandbox).

checkY I also request one example of the South Carolina Alternate Highway shield, that was used briefly in the 1960s-1970s, as reference only for the page. Example from Time and Seasons website; please use SC 28, as shown in the example. Thank you as always. --WashuOtaku (talk) 18:38, 20 May 2016 (UTC)

@Washuotaku: Didn't SC use SC-10.svg this style in the early 1960s? –Fredddie 01:44, 23 June 2016 (UTC)
Yes, pretty much. However, they did dabble in an alternate shield, it wasn't popular and was quickly terminated (I remember seeing them late in the '80s). I only need one for an example of it on the main page, not to actually use for highway pages. --WashuOtaku (talk) 01:52, 23 June 2016 (UTC)

Dosen't ODOT's MUTCD say anything about byways? Also, I don't know if that matters because I'm thinking it's a route designated by the FHWA, as shown here. Do you know if the federal MUTCD designates scenic byways? Cards84664 (talk) 23:59, 7 April 2016 (UTC)
Also, it seems to be owned by America's Byways®, but that is micromanaged by the FHWA as well. Cards84664 (talk) 00:03, 8 April 2016 (UTC)
The America's Byways signs are in the MUTCD, so that's not an issue. MUTCD D6-4.svg States are responsible for other byway markers. If they're not specifically mentioned in the state MUTCD (or supplement) then we can't upload them as PD-MUTCD. That's the point I'm at. –Fredddie 00:26, 8 April 2016 (UTC)
So for now we are just using D6-4 in jct lists? Cards84664 (talk) 00:48, 8 April 2016 (UTC)

U.S. Route 23 in Michigan does for the River Road National Scenic Byway, and I think so does M-65 (Michigan highway), so it has been done. Imzadi 1979  21:05, 17 December 2016 (UTC)

{{not done}} After a few months, I still cannot determine the copyright or the original creator of the image, who should receive credit. Discussion

I was adding shields to one of my highway pages (since I couldn't use the {{Jct}} template due to restrictions on it), and I kept noticing missing shields. The (XX) state-specific ones are only requested because there are other shields of this type for that state/district/territory. I may not have a 100% correct syntax for some of the historic shields. Some of the pages for which these shields are requested don't actually employ any shields for the road in question (not even redirect targets), that is if they exist at all (e.g., the US 101W and US 101E entries). Of course, I plan to use these shields for my pages, but I seriously think that infoboxes should be put on the pages, with the appropriate shield(s). Thank you ahead of time for all of your hard work. --Charlotte Allison (Morriswa) (talk) 02:08, 6 November 2016 (UTC)

OK OK OK. What? Where are all of these shields going to be used? File:I-80 (IL).svg for instance; where will that be used? –Fredddie 02:26, 6 November 2016 (UTC)
First, sorry for the huge "addition". Second, thanks for collapsing it. Third, wouldn't the example you gave be used on the Interstate 80 in Illinois page? And what about any other page that links to it, using the {{Jct}} template? Charlotte Allison (Morriswa) (talk) 02:36, 6 November 2016 (UTC)
I'm asking how on the I-80 IL page it would be used. Are you suggesting that {{Jct}} use state-name shields all the time? –Fredddie 02:41, 6 November 2016 (UTC)
Yes, in my opinion, that would make sense. If there is any USRD precedents against that? Also, on a different tack, for historical highways, do we use the latest shield (1926, 1948, 1957, 1961, etc.)? There are some that use the earliest shields. Charlotte Allison (Morriswa) (talk) 18:11, 6 November 2016 (UTC)
We started using neutered Interstate shields in {{Jct}} because you can't read the state name at 20px. However, state-name shields are used in {{Infobox road}} because the shield is much larger. See Interstate 80 in Iowa's infobox for proof of concept. As for historical highways, generally, we use the last style with which the road could have been signed. Example: if you have two U.S. Highways, one decommissioned in 1947 and another in 1950, they'd use the 1926 and 1948 styles respectively. –Fredddie 18:20, 6 November 2016 (UTC)
NeuteredMissouriKansasNeutered See what I'm saying? –Fredddie 18:23, 6 November 2016 (UTC)
@Morriswa: case in point: U.S. Route 16 in Michigan. That highway was decommissioned in 1962, so all of the markers are of the standard used at that time in the state, namely the 1948 versions of the M and US markers and the 1957 versions of the Interstates. (Michigan didn't adopt the 1961 version of the US Highway shield, and any adoption of the 1961 update to the Interstate shields was spotty.) Compare that to M-41 (1919–1926) which uses the 1919 versions or M-114 (1929–1945) which uses the 1926 markers. Imzadi 1979  18:39, 6 November 2016 (UTC)
@Fredddie:, I totally understand what you are saying. @Imzadi1979:, I didn't know that Michigan didn't adopt the 1961 US shield. Charlotte Allison (Morriswa) (talk) 19:14, 6 November 2016 (UTC)
Has any progress been started on this request? Charlotte Allison (Morriswa) (talk) 22:03, 7 November 2016 (UTC)
No, because I'm still not entirely clear why we suddenly need all these shields. Give me a little bit and I'll break down the list into more manageable chunks and I might have another answer. –Fredddie 23:49, 7 November 2016 (UTC)
For the time-specific shields, they are for highways that existed (or were proposed) in a different time period than the currently-existing shields. Also, for the state-specific ones, there are others like that, so I figured having all of them specific to that state make sense to me. If the state-specific ones are un-needed, then the currently-existing ones should be deleted. Charlotte Allison (Morriswa) (talk) 00:14, 8 November 2016 (UTC)
I split out the list into sections that make a little more sense. Some of these sections, I absolutely agree that we should have them. The generic 1926 and 1948 USH shields, for instance; we should have those. Other sections give me pause and some (the Unclear USH) I had no idea what you were talking about. –Fredddie 01:08, 8 November 2016 (UTC)
Thank you. I had just put them in a list alphabetized by state, as per my page (see top of this discussion). I didn't even think to sort them as you have done. You did a really great thing. If you could clarify which ones you were confused by, that would be great. Thank you so much. Charlotte Allison (Morriswa) (talk) 01:20, 8 November 2016 (UTC)
It's pretty simple, really. I have no idea what File:US 36 (MO).svg should look like. All of the others categories, I can picture what the end result would be. –Fredddie 02:54, 8 November 2016 (UTC)
Like I said, all of the state-specific ones, like the US 36 one you mentioned, were added because there was at least one other USH shield for the state that used that same state-specific format. Charlotte Allison (Morriswa) (talk) 03:14, 8 November 2016 (UTC)
I think that the US 210 shield was supposed to be for Minnesota, NOT Michigan. Charlotte Allison (Morriswa) (talk) 03:17, 8 November 2016 (UTC)
I just said I don't know what it was supposed to look like, so don't give me an example or anything. –Fredddie 03:22, 8 November 2016 (UTC)
I've removed the various Michigan requests. They're not needed as we have a full set of needed graphics. Unless we gain a number never used before, or we have a total overhaul of the specifications for the state highway markers, nothing is unmade at this point for things that would actually be used. Imzadi 1979  03:36, 8 November 2016 (UTC)
Could you better explain what you meant? Thanks. Charlotte Allison (Morriswa) (talk) 00:35, 9 November 2016 (UTC)
He's saying your request was incorrect and he removed any Michigan shields. –Fredddie 00:38, 9 November 2016 (UTC)
What do you mean by saying my request was incorrect? And why were the Michigan shields removed? Charlotte Allison (Morriswa) (talk) 00:58, 9 November 2016 (UTC)
"They're not needed as we have a full set of needed graphics. Unless we gain a number never used before, or we have a total overhaul of the specifications for the state highway markers, nothing is unmade at this point for things that would actually be used." -Imzadi1979 I made what he said a little bigger. –Fredddie 01:11, 9 November 2016 (UTC)
I saw his statement. I just didn't understand exactly what that meant. I don't want to sound stupid or ignorant, but I just want to understand. His wording is confusing to me. I see that there hasn't been very much progress on the rest of the shields. Charlotte Allison (Morriswa) (talk) 01:19, 9 November 2016 (UTC)
Has the discussion stalled? Charlotte Allison (Morriswa) (talk) 02:39, 10 November 2016 (UTC)
Thank you for the few shields that have been made, so far. Face-smile.svg Charlotte Allison (Morriswa) (talk) 22:04, 12 November 2016 (UTC)
Will any more of these be made anytime soon? Charlotte Allison (Morriswa) (talk) 02:40, 18 November 2016 (UTC)
Maybe? For not really having a specific need for these shields, I seem to be on a deadline to make them. –Fredddie 02:49, 18 November 2016 (UTC)
I don't mean to rush you. I was mainly curious as to what was going on. Charlotte Allison (Morriswa) (talk) 02:57, 18 November 2016 (UTC)
@Morriswa: to clarify for Michigan: we have full series of markers for the following:
  • M (state) for 1919, 1926, 1948 and 1973 (current).
  • US for 1926, 1948 and 1971 (current, adopted in 1973). The 1961 spec was not adopted.
  • I for 1957 and 1971 (adopted in 1973). The 1961 spec was inconsistently used, so we skipped it as unneeded to keep things simpler.

So as I said above, unless MDOT designates an M-442 tomorrow (a number never in use before), or decides to completely change the state trunkline marker to another design, Michigan has all of graphics it needs. Imzadi 1979  18:27, 4 December 2016 (UTC)

  • I've made a determination that most of the state-name Interstate shields requested should be the 1957-1961 style (think California). I've moved them around so they're in the correct section. I feel more confident that this is what we need rather than the wants of one editor. –Fredddie 21:14, 4 December 2016 (UTC)
@Fredddie:, I understand what you put here, but stop being mean to me. Most anything that I want to do or anything since I joined this project have been met with rejection and hate. Charlotte Allison (Morriswa) (talk) 00:16, 9 December 2016 (UTC)
Since I seem to be the only person making shields at the moment, it's my time that's being spent doing this. I want to be sure that my time is being spent for the benefit of the entire project, not to make you happy. You might have noticed that I made some progress on the list today. I was lucky enough to have a day off during the week when I can get a lot of stuff like this done.

On the Commons side of things, shield categorization is a mess. I've spent some time in the last week attempting to fix that. There are some old files that I need to find a home for (compare File:I-84 (PA 1957).svg to File:I-84 (PA) Metric.svg) I think the Metrics are supposed to be the 1957 style, but I don't really know.
But if that makes you feel like I'm being mean to you, that's on you. –Fredddie 00:32, 9 December 2016 (UTC)

I saw this on us-highways.com (not active now).— Preceding unsigned comment added by Alexlatham96 (talkcontribs) 04:19, 22 April 2017 (UTC)
  • Well you can still access it via web-beta.archive.org/web/20120825133106/us-highways.com but it does not have all pages and I assume it was "Bureau of Public Roads Report in 1925" it was on. However this is just a personal website, so an individuals memory or a dead personal website is not a source for this. However it does claim a source as "Based on Report of Joint Board on Interstate Highways, approved by the Secretary of Agriculture November 18, 1925, the infamous 1926 Rand McNally Road Atlas, and a 1926 AAA USA map" so maybe that gives a hint on were a RS would be found? Cheers KylieTastic (talk) 11:19, 22 April 2017 (UTC)
  • Actually I found it linked from an older archive version and then stepped forward to the latest version web-beta.archive.org/web/20150929060050/http://www.us-highways.com/1925bpr.htm#US%2085 - and this is why should never add stuff based on memory "US 85 to Lusk, then US 20 to Orin then US 185 to Cheyenne; then US 85 to Raton, NM; then US 385 to Amarillo, TX; then US 66 to Washburn, TX; then US 370" - so the claim is it was 370 not 570. The page does have named sources such as this Cheers KylieTastic (talk) 11:31, 22 April 2017 (UTC)

MI/MN shields

Why do we need the one for Michigan? It won't be used in any articles. Imzadi 1979  23:32, 16 February 2017 (UTC)
Following up, that US 110 was just a proposal from the draft numbering in 1925. Once the actual numbering was finalized in 1926, there was no US 110 in Michigan. That means no US 110 markers were ever actually made for Michigan, so we do not need such a marker in any article. In short, no, that one is not needed at all. Imzadi 1979  03:57, 17 February 2017 (UTC)
That is your stance, and -- while I disagree that there is no need for it -- I can just continue to use US 110 (1926).svg as a stop-gap measure. Charlotte Allison (Morriswa) (talk) 04:06, 17 February 2017 (UTC)
Except that US 110 never actually existed in Michigan, so there's no need to put it in any articles, except as an example of a change from the 1925 draft and the 1926 final numbering, let alone ever, ever, list in any place with a marker. I seriously question the need for these markers for highways that ever existed, or never actually existed in specific states. Imzadi 1979  04:18, 17 February 2017 (UTC)

@Che-or: county road markers are very low priority for the project. As it says above: "It is currently the working policy of the project that county routes are generally not notable enough to receive their own articles, nor major enough to appear in most junction lists. If you are here to request county route shields, please ensure your request is truly necessary." With this many items, you'd be better to file a request at commons:User:Highway Route Marker Bot/Requests to have the bot create a batch of graphics at once. Imzadi 1979  18:08, 20 August 2017 (UTC)
{{not done}} I made a request at commons:User:Highway Route Marker Bot/Requests to complete these shields, so this request is moot. –Fredddie 01:37, 8 September 2017 (UTC)
