King's Highway 403 is a 400-series highway in Ontario, between Woodstock and Mississauga, which branches off southwards from Highway 401 and travels through Hamilton and Mississauga before reuniting with the 401. It is concurrent and co-signed with the Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW) for 22 kilometers (14 mi) from Burlington to Oakville. The 403 designation was applied to a short stub in 1963; the entire route was completed when the Brantford to Ancaster section opened on August 15, 1997. The Woodstock to Burlington stretch was dedicated as the Alexander Graham Bell Parkway in 2016. Most of Highway 403 runs through suburbia, although the areas west of Hamilton are agricultural except for Brantford. In Hamilton, Highway 403 descends the Niagara Escarpment, then runs north of Hamilton Harbour to the QEW. It then travels through Burlington and Oakville, departing from the QEW to the north at the Mississauga–Oakville boundary. • KDOT closes the eastbound Lewis and Clark Viaduct, which carries Interstate 70 across the Kansas River for urgent repairs, after bridge inspectors noticed failing gusset plates in the structure.

Historic byways

• Sept. 1, 2018 – The Central Florida Expressway Authority begins accepting E-ZPass as a form of payment along its toll roads.
• Sept. 2, 1935 – A Category 5 hurricane destroys the Overseas Railroad in Florida. The state purchases the rail line to reconstruct it as the Overseas Highway.
• Sept. 3, 1959 – The southern extension of the Alaskan Way Viaduct opens in Seattle, completing the freeway and easing traffic congestion through the city.
• Sept. 4, 1923 – The Pacific Highway is formally dedicated during a ceremony at the Peace Arch in Blaine, Washington. The event is attended by 60,000 people.
• Sept. 5, 2020 – The first section of the Winston-Salem Northern Beltway is opened to traffic in Winston-Salem, North Carolina between U.S. Route 421 and U.S. Route 158.
• Sept. 6, 1962 – Drilling begins on the second bore for the Allegheny Mountain Tunnel (pictured) on the Pennsylvania Turnpike.
• Sept. 7, 2007 – Signage for the Highway of Heroes is unveiled to the public and erected on Ontario Highway 401 by the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario.
