The A253 is a short primary route running west-east through East Kent within the Isle of Thanet.
Route
The road begins at the junction with the A28 in the centre of Sarre, close to the Sarre Windmill, at a mini-roundabout. It then travels eastwards through an area of flat and low lying land with little buildings nearby. It passes four roads on the right and two on the left before terminating at a large roundabout with the A299 just north of Monkton. The total length of the A253 is approximately 1.7 miles (2.7 km).
History
Before the 2000s, the A253 continued past its junction with the A299 onto a dual carriageway, passing retail parks near Manston, and then running onto a single road parallel with Kent International Airport. The A253 then continued through the village of Cliffsend, past the Lord of the Manor Roundabout junction with the A256 and finally terminating in Chilton, on the outskirts of Ramsgate. However, since the 2000s, this 5-mile (8.0 km) stretch of road has been renumbered to the A299, which extends the A299 further so that it now starts in Ramsgate Harbour and terminates at Brenley Corner near Faversham (where it merges with the M2).
